Visit Azores Islands

Visit the Azores islands if you want nature, volcanoes, crater lakes, whale watching, hot springs, dramatic coastlines and slow Atlantic travel. The Azores are not a single-island destination. They are a group of nine Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic, each with its own rhythm, landscape and practical logic.

The most important decision when planning a trip is choosing the right islands for your style of travel. São Miguel is the easiest and most complete for a first visit. Terceira mixes history, caves and viewpoints. Pico is perfect for the volcano, vineyards and whale watching. Faial works well with Pico. São Jorge is for fajãs and hiking. Flores and Corvo are wilder and more remote. Santa Maria is warmer and beachier. Graciosa is quiet, volcanic and rural.

Which Azores island should you visit first?

For most first-time travellers, São Miguel is the best island to visit first. It has the widest range of landscapes and activities: Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, hot springs, tea plantations, viewpoints, coastal towns and whale watching. It also has the best flight connections and the easiest logistics.

If you have already visited São Miguel or want a different first trip, Terceira is the next easiest option. It has Angra do Heroísmo, Algar do Carvão, Serra do Cume and a strong cultural identity. Pico, Faial and São Jorge are better if you want a central-group route with island hopping.

How many islands should you visit?

If you have one week, choose one island or two islands at most. Trying to see too many islands in a short trip makes the Azores feel like airports and ferry schedules rather than nature. A strong first route is São Miguel only, or São Miguel plus Terceira if flights work well.

With ten to fourteen days, you can build a better multi-island itinerary. A classic central-group route is Pico, Faial and São Jorge. Another option is São Miguel plus Pico or São Miguel plus Flores, but remember that flights and weather can affect the plan.

Best time to visit the Azores

The Azores can be visited all year, but the easiest months are usually from May to October. Summer gives longer days, warmer temperatures, more stable sea conditions and hydrangeas in bloom. Spring and autumn are excellent for fewer crowds and active travel. Winter is quieter and greener, but requires more flexibility.

Weather changes quickly in the Azores. Even in summer, you can have sun, mist, rain and wind on the same day. The best approach is to plan by zones, check visibility and keep alternatives ready.

Do you need a car in the Azores?

On most islands, a car makes the trip much better. The best viewpoints, lakes, bathing areas and rural roads are not always easy to reach by public transport. A rental car lets you adapt to weather, stop when light is good and explore beyond the main towns.

You can visit some places with tours, especially in São Miguel and Terceira, but independent travellers usually get more value from renting a car. Book early in high season because availability can be limited.

Suggested itineraries for the Azores

For a first trip of 5 to 7 days, stay in São Miguel and explore it properly. Divide the island into Sete Cidades, Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo, Nordeste and the coast. This gives variety without wasting time on transfers.

For 10 days, combine São Miguel with Terceira or Pico. São Miguel gives the classic landscapes, while the second island adds either history and caves or volcano and wine culture. For 12 to 14 days, consider the central triangle: Pico, Faial and São Jorge. It is one of the most rewarding island-hopping routes in the Azores.

How to organise your trip with GPS maps

The easiest way to travel around the Azores is to group places by area and open them directly in Google Maps. This avoids unnecessary driving and helps you adapt when the weather changes.
